Our veterinary volunteer, Dina Mohamed Abdalkader Abdalwahab from Egypt, has successfully completed her 2-month volunteering activity in Sinop within the framework of the European Solidarity Corps (ESC) programme.

Throughout her volunteering experience, carried out with the support of her sending organisation, Have A Dream, Dina played an active role in activities aimed at improving the care and welfare of stray animals. As part of the daily activities, she contributed to cleaning the animals’ living areas, feeding them, providing fresh water, and supporting their treatment and recovery processes. She worked with great dedication to help ensure that the animals could live in a healthy and safe environment.

Bringing her veterinary knowledge and experience to the project, Dina not only supported daily care activities but also contributed valuable ideas for improving practices in the field. She suggested separating the equipment used in patient rooms to help reduce the spread of infectious diseases, contributing to better animal health management. She also shared the idea of using quick lime in village living areas as an effective and affordable method for controlling fleas, insects, and bacteria. In addition, she proposed ideas for regular health check-ups and more sustainable approaches to animal care and shelter management.

For Dina, this experience was not only an opportunity for professional development but also an important journey of personal growth. She shared that meeting people from different countries and cultures helped her realize how similar we are despite our differences. Working in an international environment enabled her to improve her language skills, gain a deeper understanding of other cultures, and step outside her comfort zone.

Throughout the project, Dina strengthened her ability to live independently and also learned that knowing when to ask for help is an important strength. While gaining practical veterinary experience, she had the opportunity to further develop her surgical skills and approach her profession from a broader perspective.

In Dina’s own words, this project gave her the opportunity to better understand herself and build meaningful connections with people from different cultural backgrounds. Through new experiences and challenges, she became stronger both personally and professionally.
