Andrea Alfaro, a veterinary assistant from Spain participating in our European Solidarity Corps project, has completed her two-month assignment and returned home. During her time, Andrea provided medical care and met the needs of sick and needy cats and dogs at the Gerze shelter and the ones under our care. She assisted the veterinarian in surgical operations at the Gerze shelter, helping with stitching, administering medication, changing bandages, and general clinical tasks. She also took on the treatment and care of sick cats under our care. Her duties included administering medication, changing food and water, cleaning, and ensuring their general health. On some days, she took certain cats to the Sinop clinic to follow up on their treatment processes and applied treatment protocols based on the diagnoses made at the clinic. She cared for a diabetic cat named Urho in her room, administering insulin injections twice a day and providing him with the necessary amount of his special food. She also undertook the routine care of other cats and dogs under our care. She not only met their needs such as feeding and hygiene, but also took the dogs for walks, showed them affection, and played with them. She also interned at the Academy Animal Hospital in Samsun, where she had the opportunity to observe advanced surgeries. She befriended other volunteers from different countries and learned a great deal about their cultures, languages, and life experiences. Thanks to Andrea’s work, many of our beloved pets have received care. We are very grateful to Andrea for all her selfless efforts.
